The Simon Fraser University Advocacy for Men and Boys (SFUAMB) group is launching with two exciting events in October. I’ve been attending CCMF board meetings via skype and working on the Vancouver branch for close to a year now so I thought it might be useful to introduce myself. My name is Phil Johnston and I’m currently the President of the CCMF Vancouver branch. My background is in design and animation, and it wasn’t until viewing one of Karen Straughan’s videos that I could acknowledge men’s issues were legitimate. I read the Myth of Male Power and it was a real paradigm shift for me. Once I received word that Kevin Pedersen had bravely stepped up to start a Vancouver branch, I knew I had to get involved. Working with the team of the SFUAMB has been a joy with such bright, passionate, and informed students and I’m excited to continue to grow the CCMF Vancouver branch.

As an active ally for men & boys, I have witnessed enough anti-male sentiment, unfettered misandry, and belittlement of men’s issues (both on and off campus) to know that there is a serious demand for comprehensive education and activism in the field. The SFU Advocacy for Men & Boys will finally take these matters off the back burner. We will place men’s issues and men’s human rights on the forefront of social justice and campus activism, with a welcoming yet unapologetic message. Why? Because men matter–their lives, their livelihoods, and their well-being matters.
The SFUAMB successfully tabled this month signing up 120+ members.

MISSING AND MURDERED INDIGENOUS MEN: THE UNTOLD STORY

SPEAKER: Adam Jones, Ph.D., is professor of political science at the University of British Columbia Okanagan in Kelowna, BC. He is the author of Gender Inclusive: Essays on Violence, Men, and Feminist International Relations (Routledge, 2009), and author or editor of over a dozen other books, mostly on genocide and crimes against humanity. He has also worked with the United Nations Office of the Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide, serving as an expert advisor for conflict-prevention workshops in the Balkans and elsewhere.

MEN’S ISSUES 101: EQUALITY MEANS EQUALITY FOR EVERYONE – DOESN’T IT?

SPEAKER: Dr. James Brown is a Canadian parent, grandparent, teacher and scholar who has worked in every job in education. Dr. Brown has earned seven university degrees, including a doctorate in education, and also has diplomas of advanced studies in educational administration, and in curriculum and instructional leadership. Dr. Brown is the president of the Canadian Centre for Men and Families (Toronto), and has been traveling in Europe and across Canada on his Odyssey for Equality for the past four years. As part of his Odyssey, he has made over 70 presentations to various groups. He is the author of many books dealing with the issues facing men and boys.
