The Canadian Association for Equality is a registered educational charity that supports all efforts at achieving gender equality. Our focus is on the status, health and well-being of boys, men and fathers, where attention, investment and support for educational and social programs are significantly underdeveloped. We hold public events, undertake evidence-based research, engage in public policy campaigns and host an online video series. We also run the Canadian Centre for Men and Families, Toronto’s first “men’s centre,” an open, inclusive and safe space for men’s health. The Centre hosts programs and services such as counselling, therapy, peer support, legal assistance, meditation, fathering, and support for male victims of domestic abuse and trauma.


Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Director of Development and Chief Financial Officer (hereafter referred to us “CFO”) has two major responsibilities:

1. Lead the team that fundraises for the organization’s programs and operations

2. Serve as the organization’s principal finance officer with executive oversight for all aspects of the financial management of CAFE.
The CFO has responsibility over all financial and fundraising matters related to both CAFE and CAFE’s men’s health facility, the Canadian Centre for Men and Families (CCMF). Fundraising will support CAFE and CCMF educational programs and social services.

As with all staff positions, it is expected that mission, core values and vision are exemplified by the individual filling this role. The CFO will fosters a culture of philanthropy within the organization, while ensuring that the organization’s corporate culture, systems and procedures support fund development.


Fundraising and Development

This position has primary responsibility for securing sufficient funds to realize CAFE’s goals and objectives.

Responsible for overseeing all elements of the organization’s fundraising mix, including private contributions from individual donors, membership dues, government and foundations grants, corporate sponsorships, fundraising events, sales and program revenue

Chairs the National Fundraising and Advancement Committee and manages a national team of volunteers focused on raising funds for CAFE.

Coordinates with all CAFE branches to ensure full branch participation in fundraising activities.

Responsible for donor relations and stewardship, including donor circles and appreciation events

Maintains a comprehensive schedule of grant opportunities, deadlines, follow-up activities and reporting requirements for grants received.

Ensures that philanthropy and fund development are carried out in keeping with the organization’s values, mission, vision and plans, and in compliance with the organization’s Statement of Ethics and the Donor Bill of Rights.

Helps establish performance measures, monitors results and helps the chief executive officer, development committee and board evaluate the effectiveness of the organization’s fund development program.

Develops data management system to track all sources of financial support to CAFE.

Financial Management

Lead the business and financial planning and accounting functions of the organization.

Prepare monthly and annual financial reporting materials and metrics for the Board of Directors.

Oversee budgeting, financial forecasting, and cash flow for administration for current and future programs.

Manage all bookkeeping and accounting functions and ensure necessary accountability and financial and audit controls are in place.

Coordinate all audit and payroll activities.

Serve as a strategic adviser to the CEO and Board to guide decisions related to financial matters and strategic planning.

Optimize handling of bank relationships, relationships with vendors and with merchant services.


The ideal candidate will have a degree in one of the following area or a related program: non-profit management, business, fundraising management, finance or financial planning. Other relevant educational backgrounds include social services, marketing, communications, human resources, public administration, public policy and governance.

The ideal candidate will have experience with fundraising for nonprofits or charities, including raising contributions from private donors, successfully applying for government and/or foundation grants, hosting fundraising events and/or setting up corporate sponsorship programs.

The ideal candidate will have the following additional experience and attributes:

A high level of written and oral communication skills

Ability to work well both in individual and group settings.

Ability to adapt to a continually evolving environment and thrive in an autonomous and deadline-oriented workplace.

Able to multi-task while also being highly detail-oriented.

Demonstrated experience in financial management and/or fundraising, ideally in the nonprofit sector, including planning and budgeting, financial reporting and analysis

Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a commitment to the CAFE mission

Management and leadership skills and experience

Experience with accounting and donor management software

Knowledge and experience in the following areas: the nature and dimensions of philanthropy, ethics, motivations for giving and volunteering, research and cultivation practices, standard fundraising techniques including face-to-face solicitation, proposal writing, special events and telephone solicitation.
