Breaking: Girl Writes What, Karen Straughan, calls on everyone to financially support CAFE at this critical time:

The University of Toronto Men’s Issues Awareness Society has been extremely effective at sparking a vital dialogue on campus. Unfortunately the Canadian Association for Equality has learned that the administration will force a mandatory $964 security fee on our allied campus group to cover costs of police they have deemed necessary next Friday. This means the event “Caring About University Men: Why We Need Campus Men’s Centres in a Time of Crisis, with Miles Groth” is currently in serious jeopardy.

Our political opponents, including the University of Toronto Student Union, enjoy high levels of funding via mandatory levies incurred by all students. All students pay for events like their forthcoming “What’s Wrong with the MRA? The Problem of Men’s Rights Organizing” featuring a panel discussing how our events “incite harassment” in order to “present a case for why Men’s Rights organizations and activists are dangerous and why we should build towards an organized feminist movement that can respond to them.” Similar to their Townhall event on Sexism last February, at which two of our members were identified, bullied and ejected from the room, this event promises “There will be no video or audio recording of this event. Any oppressive language and/or actions will not be tolerated, and those engaging in such behavior will be asked to leave the event.”

The University of Toronto Men’s Issues Awareness Society by contrast provides an open forum for all views and never turns anyone away. Yet with essentially zero resources we can not compete with our political opponents without your help. Please do not let law-breaking protesters win this battle for freedom of speech and the right to address legitimate gender inequality at the University of Toronto by forcing us to cancel this event. We need your financial help at this critical juncture. The Canadian Association for Equality, working with its allied campus groups, is starting to make a real difference. We can not let our momentum falter. Please donate now! We are pleased to let you know that in light of recent developments we will be extending our matching campaign. Your donations and memberships will continue to be doubled by our donor until September 30!

We need your help urgently. Please visit or contact us at or 416-479-0718 as soon as possible

The administration is doing what they think is best, but they are naive. They are rewarding misandric and hateful rioters with the message that their illegal actions, like blocking exit doors and pulling fire alarms, will prove effective in stomping our student club and stopping our programs at the University. This result can not be allowed to happen, or all students groups are at risk of increased censorship and the University risks becoming a more dangerous place. We strongly encourage you not to contact the University until CAFE has determined what actions it will take following the event. Any perceived harassment will be detrimental to our ultimate goals at the University.

The single best way to respond is by assisting our fundraising efforts. CAFE remains fully committed to active and vibrant campus-based Men’s Issues Awareness. However the current situation makes it absolutely clear how much our long-term interest requires our own home where we can work with our allies but without impediments, to address gender inequality against men. That home is the Canadian Centre for Men and Families, and you are critical to making it a reality!

We will for now continue to plan for our upcoming event. The full information is here. Following the talk you are all invited to a special fundraising reception at O’Grady’s Tap & Grill at 171 College St (just across from the event venue)

Please circulate this announcement as widely as possible.

Thank you,
